So you want to know where your kids have been all this time? This portion of the site is designed to convey general and specific information to parents on the program and it's various events. Additional information will be added and/or linked from this page soon. Please visit the calendar page under the delegation heading for conference dates.

:: the program ::

The Culver Palms Family YMCA (CPY) Youth and Government (Y&G) delegation is one many delegations from across the state of California that participate in the California Model Legislature and Court Program (ML/C).

The California Model Legislature and Court Program is operated through the California YMCA. It consists of over 2,200 High School students in grades 10-12 which participate regularly on a local level in one of the nearly 100 delegations across the state.

Weekly delegation meetings are held across the state in preparation for several statewide conferences.

The first conference, held in November, is the first of two training and elections conferences (T&E I) held at Camp Roberts, Paso Robles (BOB). T&E I (BOB I) gives every participant experience in public speaking, leadership training and role exposure to the many different areas of the program. This conference also elects many state officers, including Speaker of the Assembly, Lt. Governor and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The second training and elections conference (T&E II), also held at Camp Roberts, focuses on each participants specific role in the program. Sessions include Parliamentary Procedure training, bill committee preparation, and Joint Sessions with all delegation members for convention style elections. Several appointed positions are decided at this conference, including Governor's cabinet positions, Jury Trial Attorneys and National Issues Presiding Commissioners.

The third conference of the season, climaxing in Sacramento, is where the students involved in the Model Legislature take over the State Capitol and attempt to pass delegation bills through the legislative process on the Senate and assembly floor. Those involved in the Model Court portion act as judges and attorneys in the Trial, Jury Trial, Appellate and Supreme Courts. In addition to Senators, Assembly members, and Judicial members, there is a large media program, consisting of print media, which creates a daily newspaper at the conference and broadcast media, which broadcast daily television news programs through the Sheraton Grand Sacramento and Hyatt Regency Sacramento hotels closed circuit television. Additional program areas include Lobbyists, Pages, State Board of Education, State Board of Equalization, Special Investigative Panel, Sophomore Forum and the Governor's Cabinet.

Of the near 100 Youth and Government Delegations throughout the state, most all are operated through a local YMCA. The Culver Palms Family YMCA oversees the Culver Palms Delegation which consists of YMCA professional staff,  6 volunteer adult advisors and around 50 - 60 participants from Culver City High School, Loyola High School, Venice High School, Hamilton High School and additional local schools that fall within the CPY service area.

The California Model Legislature and Court Program is supervised and supported by a Governing Board, and enlists the support of a high level Advisory Board to help secure state facilities. These boards are consisting of state constitutional officers, legislators, corporate executives and other government officials. We are thankful for the continued support of the individuals who make up our board and keep our prestigious program well guided.

:: meetings ::

The Culver Palms Delegation currently meets weekly on Thursdays at 5:30 PM at the City Hall Cambers in Culver City. Our weekly meetings are followed with a delegation dinner at various dining facilities around the area. Often, our delegation dinners are also delegation fundraisers, as restaurants contribute a portion of their earnings back to our YMCA. This donation helps to cover some of the general supply costs attributed to our program at the YMCA. All guests are welcome to attend our weekly meetings and dinners.

Additional meetings apply to Delegation officers, who meet on a weekly basis on Monday nights at the YMCA to plan each Wednesday night's meeting. Occasional committee meetings are also scheduled for delegates, which may fall on any given day throughout the week. One committee meeting to be aware of is the newsletter committee, which will be meeting monthly to compile our delegation newsletters.

:: adult staff ::

The Culver Palms Family YMCA Youth & Government Delegation is home to a talented and experienced group of adult advisors. All advisors are volunteers for this program and take part in because of their dedication to the YMCA, the community, the program and the delegates. All 14 of our advisors are former Culver-Palms Y&G participants and have over 60 years of combined experience as Y&G advisors.
